Optimize Your Foot Health with Custom Orthotics

Optimize Your Foot Health with Custom Orthotics

Up to 87% of Americans experience foot pain at one time or another. Although most cases are mild and improve with rest and activity changes, chronic problems like bunions, arthritis, and plantar fasciitis can persist for years. The good news is custom orthotics can effectively address these issues and prevent the need for surgery.

At Foot and Ankle Excellence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, experienced podiatrist Bruni Leka, DPM, regularly prescribes custom orthotics to treat foot and ankle problems. Here, we explain what custom orthotics are and highlight several of their benefits.

What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are prescription shoe inserts. They’re similar to the heel pads and gel insoles at most pharmacies and grocery stores. However, while mass-produced products are one-size-fits-all, custom orthotics are designed specifically for your feet.

There are two types of custom orthotics. Depending on your needs, Dr. Leka may prescribe:

Rigid or ‘functional’ orthotics

These orthotics are made from hard, inflexible materials like plastic and carbon fiber. They go inside close-toed shoes and support the arch of your foot.

Soft or ‘accommodative’ orthotics

These orthotics are made of soft, squishy materials. They ease pressure on sore spots, like blisters, corns, and diabetic wounds. Since soft orthotics are bulky, you may need to wear them with special footwear, like diabetic shoes.

4 benefits of custom orthotics

Now that you know what custom orthotics are, let’s explore how they support your feet. Here are a few of their top benefits:

1. Personalized fit

Over-the-counter (OTC) insoles and heel pads are designed to support anyone and everyone. This makes them affordable but has an impact on their efficacy. For example, an insert that’s too small may change position when you walk or rub against your foot, increasing the risk of blisters and irritation.

Custom orthotics are different in that they’re made specifically for you. Dr. Leka takes digital scans of your feet that precisely measure their length, width, and unique features. A laboratory then uses that information to manufacture custom orthotics that fit perfectly.

2. Lasting pain relief

Many foot and ankle problems, like plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and arthritis, cause pain and stiffness, making daily activities like standing, walking, and exercising uncomfortable.

Custom orthotics have a unique design that eases strain on your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They also support good posture, making it easier to walk and move comfortably.

3. Improved foot mechanics

Foot pain is often exacerbated by your gait (how you walk). Many people pronate (roll their foot inward) or supinate (roll their foot outward) when taking a step. Although these movements are subtle, they can have major impacts on your comfort and quality of life.

Custom orthotics hold your foot and ankle in proper alignment and correct imbalances like pronation and supination. This reduces the risk of foot pain and helps prevent injuries.

4. Relief from excess pressure

If you have corns, calluses, or diabetic ulcers, wearing socks and shoes can cause further irritation and inflammation, not to mention increase your risk of infection. Soft orthotics take pressure off these sensitive areas, so you can move comfortably without worrying about complications.

We can determine if custom orthotics are right for you!
